The Tasman District Council is planning to start excavating Richmond’s main street in August to replace the ageing stormwater system and lower its profile to improve flood protection in Richmond. The $4.2million project also incorporates funding to give Queen St a makeover and this Thursday councillors will look at some of the streetscape design options when they attend a full council meeting in Richmond. There are a number design features of the “shop front to shop front” redesign of Queen St between Wensley Rd and McIndoe Place, including widening footpaths from 2.7m to 4m. potentially be incorporated in the makeover, including the closure of Croucher St and alleyways onto Queen St to provide “a safer and more pedestrian-friendly environment”. The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board has also requested discussions with council on open air and smoking in public places, that could potentially feature in the redesign of Queen St. Council plans to finalise a detailed design for Queen St by June with construction scheduled to start in August. The project will take a year to finish.

Cyclists will soon be riding through the Spooners Tunnel, with the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trail Trust and Tasman District Council this week expected to set an opening date for mid to late April. The unused 1352-metre long rail tunnel has been incorporated into the section of the Tasman Great Taste Trail between Wakefield and Kohatu and will be the longest in the southern hemisphere open to cycling. Nelson Tasman Cycle Trail Trust member Elizabeth Bean expects the tunnel to be a major attraction for cyclists, as well as providing a muchneeded boost to the Tapawera district’s economy. “We think it will be big. We put two items about the tunnel up on our Facebook page and they had the most hits we’ve ever had,” Elizabeth says. “I put some old photos on the other day and huge numbers of people looked at them there just seems to be a thing about tunnels.” Elizabeth says the section of the trail from Wai-iti Domain to the Spooners Tunnel and through to Norriss Gully is almost finished, while the tunnel had been well maintained by the Tapawera Historical

Cycle trail trustee Jo Leyland outside the Spooner’s Railway Tunnel, which next month will be added to the Great Taste Cycle Trail. Society. She says the next step is to extend the trail to Tapawera and the trust is holding a meeting in the town on April 7 to discuss the potential benefits of the trail to the district’s economy. “Tapawera is very excited about it. They have been really pushing for it because they see it as a really good opportunity.” Elizabeth says the number of riders using the completed sections of the Tasman Great Taste Trail is increasing dramatically and that will ultimately benefit the region’s economy. A survey of riders on the trail, conducted by the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, shows that 208,000 cyclists used the

trail last year with 13,000 using the trail over the 11-day Christmas-New Year period. A total of 64 per cent of riders were local, 27 percent were from elsewhere in New Zealand and nine per cent from overseas. Fifty-six per cent of riders were over 50 and 96 per cent reported satisfaction with the trail cycling experience. “It’s gathering momentum everything is tracking up. All the signs are good,” Elizabeth says. The trust’s meeting in Tapawera will be held in the Tapawera Community Centre on April 7 from 6pm to 8pm. Pond to be fixed, if we can raise $600k Kate Russell

Boats could be back sailing in Tahunanui’s Modellers Pond sooner than expected, after Nelson City councillors voted to push ahead with fixing the ponds algae problem on Thursday - but there is a catch. The Nelson Society of Modellers needs to raise $600,000 by September to make the upgrade a reality. The council has committed $600,000 towards the $1,190,000 project – meaning that the Modellers have six months to make up the shortfall, but president of the society, Nigel Gibbs, says they are “quietly confident” that they can raise the money in time. A recommendation to give the society up until the end of November to raise the funding short-fall was amended at Thursday’s meeting, with councillors voting 7 - 5 to push the deadline forward to the end of September, in order to get the project underway sooner. With a new council to be voted in this October, the project could have been held over to the next annual plan if the deadline had been left at November. But if the funding target is met by September, Nigel says the project

can then start as soon as resource consent is granted. Councillor Matt Lawrey, who proposed the amendment, says the pond has “given the city a headache for more than a decade”. “We don’t want this issue dragging on into another term of council – this council should be the one that moves the city forward with this issue,” he said. Councillor Pete Rainey echoed Matt’s sentiment, saying that council needed to “sort it out for Tahunanui and green-light it”. Nigel Gibbs says the society is happy with how the council has consulted with them, and has no problems with the deadline being moved forward. “It’s a big ask, but if we can’t raise the money in six months, we not going to able to do it in nine months,” he says. “Previous investigations into whether anyone would help us were favourable, so we just need to pin people down and get them to put their money where their mouth is.” The project would see the removal of contaminated material in the pond, installation of subsurface drainage, installation of a concrete floor to the pond and aerators to increase oxygenation.

It would also involve modifications to the centennial pump station, and installing automated controls at the Parkers Cove outlet and the pond inlet/outlet weir to coordinate emptying and filling the pond with sea water. Two other options for the pond were also presented to council last June, which included keeping the pond “as is”, or reinstating it to an “estuarine environment”, which, at an estimated cost of

Nelson set to profit from Lions rugby tour Nelson’s recent bumper tourism season is set to continue into the depths of next winter, with local tourism operators saying they are already fielding enquires for the 2017 Lions Tour of New Zealand. Even though there are no games being played in Nelson, one Tahunanui Bed and Breakfast owner says has been taking bookings for the tour since January, as people are struggling to find accommodation in Wellington. “I think a lot of people are choosing to stay here and commute to Wellington for the games,” he says. “I’ve never experienced anything like it.”

Gisela Purcell, international marketing manager for Nelson Tasman Tourism, says that she also seeing a demand for Nelson accommodation during the tour next June and July. “I had one agent in Sydney asking me about accommodation during the tour as apparently Wellington is already filling up,” she says. “She was planning to fly clients to Nelson to sleep and back to Wellington for the games.” She says it “makes sense” for people to consider basing themselves here, with a short flight time to the capital and a wider range of regular flights now available. “It’s relatively cost effective, plus it gives

Lynda Keene, chief executive officer of Nelson Tasman Tourism, says the bookings are understandable, considering the UK market is Nelson’s largest visitor market. “It is great news that potential supporters are planning so far in advance,” she says. “Having an event like this will be great for the region and help with improving winter visitor numbers, and we are keen to pro-

mote the region to attract fans travelling around the country.” Lynda also says that, based on early indications, Nelson can expect to have a busier winter in 2016 after what was a “terrific” summer season which saw Nelson’s highest number of visitors ever. “There are more conferences this winter, with the Light Nelson event and Feast of Senses in July,” she says. “If international trends continue we anticipate we’ll see growth next summer, and with new airlines and increased capacity, we anticipate an even stronger summer, shoulder and winter season in the next 18-24 months.”

NEWS RICHMOND FIRE WAS PERMITTED: A fire that could be seen from many of Richmond early last Wednesday morning was a controlled and permitted burn, says the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade. Richmond fire chief Craig Piner says the fire was under control and those running it had a permit for the fire. “Smoke seen rising from Lower Queen St was a controlled burn of debris from a demolished house,” he says. The Mapua Easter Fair always attracts a big crowd, and with beautiful weather, this year was no different. Sun greeted Mapua on Easter Sunday and the thousands who made their way to the village for the annual Easter Fair. Frances Dick, Wednesday, February 24: Frances Dick has returned from Horse of the Year in Hastings as the Grade ll Champion. Frances placed first in the team test scoring 71.1 per cent, first in the championship test with 71.2 per cent and first in the freestyle test with 72.5 per cent. Equestrian Sports New Zealand (ESNZ) are now considering her results from the three major qualifying competitions, the Boneo Classic in Australia, Bates New Zealand Dressage Championship in Fielding and Horse of the year. Trolley Derby, Wednesday, March 16: While the Mike Pero Trolley Derby offered spectators and drivers some great racing down Nelson’s Collingwood St, it also raised vital funds for Big Brothers, Big Sisters Nelson. The organisation provides mentoring friendships to children in need of additional adult support and this year they received $1400 from the event. The money will be going towards finding new mentors as well as supporting current matches. Milkie goes back to his past Simon Bloomberg Nelson milkie Trevor Nicholls is looking forward to a blast from the past and reducing his carbon footprint when he starts delivering milk in glass bottles again. A lot of milk used to come in glass bottles when Trevor started delivering around Nelson and Tasman 21 years ago, but it was later replaced with cardboard cartons and plastic milk bottles. Now Trevor has decided to take his business, Milk and More, back in time and offer whole milk, from Stokebased Oaklands Farm, in good old-fashioned glassbottles. "We've had quite a bit of demand for it since the success of Oaklands Farm milk," Trevor says. "It tastes better out of glass and it's better for the environment because the bottles are reusable and the milk is a local product." Oaklands Farm milk is already sold from vending machines around Nelson and Tasman, and Trevor

Trafalgar Centre set for Giant re-opening Nelson’s main indoor civic centre will reopen this Saturday night when the Nelson Giants play their first home game of the National Basketball League. Mayor Rachel Reese says it will be great to have the Giants back playing in their spiritual home of “the hangar”. “I’m sure the crowd will love it and get behind them too, and a first home game win would be the perfect way to mark the occasion, so I encourage Nelsonians to turn out in force and cheer on their team,” she says. Over 60 different companies have been involved in the $12.9 million strengthening and redevelopment of the Trafalgar Centre and Rutherford Park so far. Car park kerbing is all

in, the seal is underway and the new access road should be chip-sealed this week. Temporary seats have been set up for the game, with more seating to go under the bleachers this week. Other work, including work on the new northern upgrade, will be continuing and the resurfacing of the main hall is scheduled to occur in June. Mud runners ready for fun Simon Bloomberg The Muddy Buddy adventure run is being held this Sunday when hundreds of people will slip, slop and slide their way around the mudflats of the Moutere Estuary near Tasman School. The annual event has grown in popularity since it started in 2010, last year attracting almost 1000 mud runners. Although Muddy Buddy is all about having fun, it has been valuable for the school, raising around $11,000 last year to fund the purchase of IT equipment and security lighting, while previous year’s earnings have paid for the extension of the adventure playground. Muddy Buddy has also provided the basis for one of the school’s more interesting science projects with students monitoring the impact of the event on the estuary. Teacher Fred Robertson says the students started the project four years ago in response to concerns that the event was harming the environment and it has evolved into a “fun and educational” long-term study. One of the students, Thomas Schwartzenbach, 12, says the study involves counting the number of crab holes and snails in a 30cm square inside and outside the area where Muddy Buddy goes, to see what is happening.

“The results show that numbers are only slightly affected and also recover quickly,” Thomas says. “We usually get around 25 crab holes inside the course and 30 outside, so it shows that Muddy Buddy does have an impact but it is very small.” Thomas says the school has also started a revegetation scheme, planting estuarine grasses around the course used by Muddy Buddy. In addition, the school changed the course slightly last year to avoid ecologically sensitive areas of the Moutere Estuary. On Sunday, Muddy Buddies can do one to three laps of the 2km course which includes obstacles designed to get them as muddy as possible. The event will also be a fancy-dress party with a prize for the craziest outfit - there are also plenty of spot prizes including two bikes from Avanti Plus Richmond. People can enter Muddy Buddy online at tasman.school.nz for $10 per individual and $35 for a family or on the day for $15 per person or $45 for a family. Coffee from The Grind Coffee Roasters and food will be available, with the Water Boy and Tasman Water Care Distribution on hand to help wash down mud runners after the event. Muddy Buddy will start from Tasman School on Aporo Rd this Sunday at 11am with registration from 9.30am to 10.30am. Shoes must be worn.

Brittany Spencer Nayland College’s 50th Jubilee celebrations saw the largest gathering of foundation pupils since the very first day of the school’s existence. The school’s four-day reunion hosted 510 former staff and students, including 55 foundation pupils. In the class of 1966, Chris Wells was one of the first Nayland College students and says his memories all stemmed from the rugby field. “We were a pretty tight bunch because we were the underdogs for so many years. We had to prove ourselves and make our own name, and rugby was a big part of that.” Chris says the Nayland-Waimea rugby rivalry was as intense as the New Zealand-Australia rivalry. “Beating Waimea on the field was the premium, bugger Nelson Boys, they were just a rabble over the years, but Waimea were the new kids on the block and we loved to knock ‘em down.” Foundation pupil John Barker says he’ll never forget the first school assembly. “It was just a small gathering behind where the music block is now and we had to just stand outside, some guys even passed out because of the heat, it was roasting. But each year assemblies got bigger as we built up the school, form by form, and eventually we got our own hall,” says John. While John remains a local, some of the former staff and students have come from as far as Brazil and the United Kingdom, and John says it’s great walking to school with his former classmates again. Principal Daniel Wilson says his favourite event was the Chatters and Platters evening on Friday. “I’ve never had so many conversations with former students talking about old memories, in the space of only a couple of hours,” says Daniel. “I jumped up on stage and performed with the jazz band and there was this awesome moment of standing with my current students and looking out at all the former students and principals, and realising that I’m part of something so much bigger that just keeps moving forward. He says the reunion went “amazingly well”. The reunion opened with a powhiri on Thursday and has since featured an open school day, group photographs, sports tournaments, a game of golf, bike ride, formal dinner and several other social events.

Snapper Classic raises $8k for Coastguard The Tasman Bay Snapper Classic hooked some impressive figures this year: 240 people took part, 140 snapper were weighed-in, $37,000 in prizes were given out, and now it has announced that $8000 was donated to the Nelson Coastguard. The Tasman Bay Snapper Classic was held earlier this month and was a huge success with the largest ever competitor turn out. Its prize pool was also the biggest ever and included a $14,500 boat as one of its prizes. That was won by Nelson man Jeff Holden for catching the averageweighed snapper at 2.07kg. But organiser Troy Dando says what was particularly pleasing was the amount they were able to raise for the Coastguard. “They do a great job and it was a good charity for this event with all the boaties taking part and able to help give back.” Coastguard president Graeme Richards says the money will go into its replacement boat fund. “It’s fantastic, we’re really excited about it. We thought it was best to

This work is part of the Nelson Southern Link Investigation, part of the Government’s Accelerated Regional Roading Package for state highway projects.

Your contribution will help us finalise the Programme Business Case for the project and, in particular, allow us to identify a preferred approach to help address Nelson’s arterial transport problems. We also want your feedback on the Rocks Road Walking and Cycling Investigation as it is important that key decisions made on both projects are informed by one another as they advance. Now is the time where we look at all the possible ideas. We want your feedback on three potential approaches that have been developed. We also want the community’s views on other options, or combinations of options, to address two identified problems on Nelson’s arterial routes.

The Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club hosted its annual club wharf fishing evening recently. The evening is where several families enjoy fish and chips, a few laughs, and satisfaction watching the smiles on the faces of the children catch spotties, yellowtail mackerel and sprats from the wharf. Dawnbreakers encourage families to come and experience all aspects of fishing, and starting off with wharf fishing is usually a child's first taste of catching fish, and hopefully gets them 'hooked' into the sport long-term. The secret to successful wharf fishing is using the right rod and hooks, Sabiki hooks are recommended, these come with 5-6 small hooks in a rig, sometimes with lumo beads or fish skin skirts.

Adding a small piece of bait will give added advantage. Tie some burley to the wharf near to where you are fishing will help entice the fish in close. Keeping it simple with the right gear will also ensure the kids chances of pulling up a fish are good. Big rods and hooks are not ideal at wharfs, especially for young family members learning. An hour either side of the high tide is also good for a decent bite time. With Easter-time here, it is a good chance to spend some quality time with your family, so use it wisely and take the kids fishing. It's better for them to learn the skills early, so they can catch their own as they get older, and in turn pass the skills onto their own children. Bowlers lead Wanderers to one day crown It was Wanderers’ boosted batting attack that was supposed to do the damage, but in the end it was their bowlers that secured the club the region’s one-day cricket crown. Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers batted first in the Nelson Cricket oneday final at Saxton Oval on Saturday. Their total of 197 didn’t seem enough, especially when Waimea Toi Toi United were 121/2 with ten overs to play in the 45-over contest. But then came the fight-back from Wanderers, first Dan Cooper snared two key wickets, then he and Connor Goodman put the brakes on Waimea’s attack. Waimea eventually fell short of the target, finishing their allotted overs at 178/8. Wanderers captain Dan Cooper says he felt the game was “slipping away” when he brought himself on to bowl. “I wasn’t really sure how we were going to win it. But it paid off, I got a couple of wickets and Goody [Goodman] did a good job. Then the run rate started to get up to 8s and 9s and we could afford to throw the field back because they needed boundaries.” The games ends the senior club cricket season, with Stoke/Nayland earlier winning both the two-day and T20 competitions.

Whakatu boxers win four from five

When Libby Brumwell got her first taste of boxing at last year’s Fight 4 Victory, she loved it so much she decided to take it up as a sport. A year later the pint-sized hairdresser climbed in the ring again, this time for her first amateur fight at the South Island Novice Tournament in Christchurch. Because the corporate fight counted as her first fight, Libby was put in the novice grade, for those with one to five fights. There she was matched against an MMA fighter from Dunedin. Libby admits she was a tad nervous. “I was really nervous and really

surprised that I won,” she says. She didn’t just win, Libby’s result was unanimous with the judges, meaning all three thought she won each round. It was one of four wins for the Whakatu Boxing Club at the event. Head coach Dion Hall says it was a great weekend for his fighters. “We took seven [fighters] down hoping to get matches and five did, of those five, four won. We were one judge off a perfect weekend,” he says. The only Whakatu fighter to lose was Thornton Taulilo, on split decision. Dion says he was a standout performer despite the loss. “Thor stood out, just for his composure and how we went about

Dion says the club is now eyeing up another competition in Christchurch on April 30. “We’ll be putting a lot of fighters forward to see if they can get a good even match. That’s a big part of it, I don’t mind if the guys lose, as long as it was a good even match up.”

Nelson teams get ready for Godzone Simon Bloomberg

Nelson’s John Harris, Vicky Shelling, Stephen Busby and Callum Irvine aren’t expecting to get much sleep over the next week as they take on the biggest challenge of their adventure racing careers. Team Silky is one of 71 teams entered in the Godzone adventure race that starts this weekend. The expedition-length multisport race will involve kayaking, canoeing, trekking and mountainbiking through the Tasman district’s hinterland and John says its extreme scale will make it “a big unknown” for their novice team. Although John has done a lot of 24-hour races, he says the Godzone Pursuit teams will cover around 400km in up to six days and that’s a big step up. It will be even more of a learning curve for Vicky, who has only done 12-hour races, and Stephen and Callum, who have been limited to six-hour races. “We have gone on some solid training missions where we have only slept a few hours over two days, but racing for six days will be very different,” John says. “It’s hard to know how your feet will feel after six days or how sore

your backside will be on the bike - it’s a big unknown.” Team member Stephen Busby admits he’s feeling “nervous” about the challenge, especially dealing with long days and nights without much sleep. Adventure racers typically only sleep a few hours a night during six or seven day races. “It’s one thing to do a decent, long day in training but it’s another to do an expedition-length race,” Stephen says. “It’s a long time for things to go wrong.” However, Stephen says he’s confident they have the “right mixture” in their team to get through the challenges and reach their “ultimate goal of finishing the race as friends”. “We have a good team dynamic with a good range of skills, which is important. The top teams are successful because they are fit, but also because they get along well and work well together.” John says they have been training hard for the race, spending weekends mountainbiking, trekking and kayaking around areas likely to be included in the race, although the course is not revealed until hours before the start. What we have here is like no other area, with the diversity of rivers, lakes and mountains,” he says on the Godzone website. Team Silky are entered in the slightly shorter version of the

race, Godzone Pursuit, which starts on Sunday. The seven-day, 500km Godzone Pure starts on Saturday and includes top Nelson adventure racers Ash and Naomi Whitehead and Brent Edwards, who join Auckland’s Stu Lynch in Team Swordfox. David Ayre and brothers Rhys and Huw John have teamed up with Maketu’s Anna Bartlett for Godzone Pure. Nelson’s Dan Bush is a member of Team Yealands Family Wines, Tim Bygate has joined Tag Team,

Tracy Perry is a member of Team MD Outdoor while Gilbert Roberston, Robyn Dunmore, Gerard Malcolm and Ed Steenbergen are in Team Village Cycles. says it will be a tough assignment for his young side. “It shows the strength of Wanderers, they should be top of their game and it will be a bloody big challenge. But we both start at zero.” He says the pressure will all be on the defending champion Wanderers. “They’re the champions and they have pretty good player depth but being champions comes with pressure, defending a title isn’t easy. You’re expected to win and they will be expected to win this weekend.”

He says the attitude of the Waimea squad is good and they are working on their execution. But a lack of attitude has never been missing from a WaimeaWanderers clash and Mark says they will be happy to be playing the game at home. “Every little bit helps, it’s always nice playing at home. That’s where we are when we train and you know the surroundings inside and out, and it’s always good to play in front of your crowd.” The game kicks off at Jubilee Park at 3pm. In the other division one result from last Thursday, Kahurangi beat Stoke 21-17 in Riwaka.

The last time Waimea Old Boys and Wanderers met in a division two rugby game it was for the championship – both sides will enter this Saturday’s match up in rather different circumstances. Neither side has won a game so far this season after both were finalists in 2014 and 2015, sharing a title each. But Waimea coach Wayne Bateman isn’t worried and says this Saturday’s match will be a “ripper”. “They always are against Wanderers.” The fierce rivals are both down on player numbers but the first round of the division two competition is split between town and country teams, meaning the points do not carry over to the remainder of the season.

Wayne says he has 11 of his starting 15 unavailable. “We have a lot of new players this year, we have guys who are playing for the seniors and guys with cricket commitments. Once we get a full roster we’ll be into it.” Waimea lost its first game of the season to Marist 13-11 after holding an 11-0 lead at half time. Its second match, last Thursday night, was against a strong Nelson side with Waimea losing 32-10. “Nelson were a very good side,” says Wayne. “They had a couple of guys who played for Nelson Bays and Buller, so they’ll be very tough this season.” Wanderers lost its Thursday night game to Marist, 20-17. The game at Jubilee Park kicks off at 1.15pm.

The Council has accepted for notification under clauses 5 and 26 of Schedule 1 of the Resource Management Act, a Private Plan Change Request to the Tasman Resource Management Plan. Requester: Progressives Enterprises Ltd (Change 62) Location: 144 Salisbury Road, Richmond Purpose: To rezone approximately 1.3ha of land from Residential to Commercial to accommodate a Countdown supermarket, small scale retail/commercial development, a community facility, associated car parking, access and landscaping. Submissions Any person may make a submission on any part of the Private Plan Change. Submissions can be sent to the Environmental Policy Manager, Tasman District Council, Private Bag 4, Richmond 7050, to be accepted by Council until 4.00 pm on Tuesday 26 April 2016. Submission forms are available as indicated below under “Availability of Private Plan Change Request”. Submissions must be in writing, clearly indicating support or opposition to the provisions, the decision that the submitter wishes the Council to make (with reasons), whether or not the submitter wishes to be heard in support of the submission and an address for service or contact address. Consideration of Proposed Change After submissions have closed, Council will publish a summary of all decisions requested by submitters. There will be a further period of 10 working days within which further submissions in support or opposition to those submissions made may be sent to Council. Council will then hold hearings on all submissions and all submitters may be heard. After the Council considers the submissions and makes its decisions, any submitter who is not satisfied with the decision has the right of appeal to the Environment Court. Tasman District Council’s Draft Schedule of Charges 2016/2017 You are invited to make submissions on our draft Schedule of Charges for the coming year. We recover some of the costs of the services we provide through these fees and charges. Some charges are set by statute, and others by the Council. All the charges are reviewed each year, and changes made if necessary. The reason we charge for some services is to make sure the costs of providing it are recovered from those who benefit, rather than from the general ratepayer. The draft Schedule of Charges covers the year from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017. The full proposed Schedule of Charges is available for viewing on Council’s website at www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback and during normal office hours at the following Tasman District Council offices and libraries:

Thousands are expected to attend the popular annual Positive Ageing Expo, a showcase of the recreational, health and social services available in the region for retirees and those planning for retirement. With more than 70 stallholders, the expo has plenty to offer anyone interested in making ageing a positive experience. The expo attracts crowds of more than 2000 most years, and has received a TrustPower Community Award commendation. This year there will be seminars, demonstrations, the chance to have a go at a range of activities such as tai chi, Nordic walking, Sit and Be Fit, as well as quick health checks.
